Binance proof of address rejected: what passes, and why yours did not

A proof of address is refused for one of five reasons: a document type that is not on the list, a date outside the validity window, an address that does not match what you typed, a name that does not match your ID, or a scan that is cropped, black and white or photocopied.

By Cobalt DeskPublished Updated
Refused becauseWhat to send instead
Not an accepted typeA document from the accepted list that is not on the refused list
Older than the windowOne issued within 6, 3 or 2 months, depending on the country (validity)
The address differs from what you typedThe same address, line by line, including the unit number and postcode (review)
The name differs from your verified IDA document in the verified name, or an identity update first (identity)
Unreadable, cropped, black and white or a photocopyA colour PDF from the provider, or a flat photo with all four corners in frame (capture)

Change that one thing and resubmit once. Binance asks for proof of address when raising the verification level, when a payment method or region requires it, and when you update your residence after a move.

What a proof of address must show

Binance’s proof-of-address page lists five things every proof of address must contain:

  • your name, “the same as the ID submitted”;
  • your home address, “the same as the residential address entered”;
  • the date of issue;
  • the issuing authority;
  • a reference to that authority, such as a logo, contact details or a website.

A document missing any of these is refused however good the photo is. The two “same as” lines are the ones to check first: a bill in a partner’s name, or an address typed with a different flat number than the bill shows, fails either of them.

Which proof of address documents Binance accepts

The page groups accepted documents in four sets.

GroupExamples the page lists
Utility and serviceElectricity, water or sewerage bills; a signed utility contract confirmation; an internet provider statement; landline, internet, TV or communication-package bills
Bank or financial institutionBank or credit card statement; investment account statement; a stamped or signed bank reference, address confirmation or balance letter; a statement with account summary; a transfer receipt; a mortgage statement
GovernmentOfficial government correspondence; a registered tenancy contract or its registration certificate (valid within 1 year); a certificate of residence from local government (3 or 6 months depending on the country); a national ID or residence permit showing the address, if it is not the document used for identity
OtherBuilding management statements; home insurance statement or certificate; a university rental agreement; a university letter confirming attendance and address; government student grants or loans sent to the address

The page also links government portals in a number of countries where an official certificate of residence can be downloaded; if yours is one of them, that certificate is one more option.

Documents Binance refuses as proof of address

The refused list is as useful as the accepted one, because several items on it look like they should work:

  • credit card statements from retail stores;
  • payslips and employment contracts;
  • transaction receipts, even with a delivery or billing address;
  • preliminary bank statements, bank marketing letters, fee statements, letters confirming a closed debt;
  • mortgage or loan letters other than statements;
  • bills that do not say what service was subscribed;
  • insurance documents other than home insurance;
  • streaming service bills;
  • mail forwarding and virtual office addresses;
  • cut-off notices, payment reminders and payment schedules;
  • mobile phone bills, except in a few jurisdictions;
  • medical bills;
  • anything addressed to a PO box.

The pattern: the document has to come from an authority or institution that has your address on record, be about an ongoing service or relationship at that address, and show the address itself rather than a box.

Bank statement refused as proof of address: why

A bank statement is on the accepted list, so if one is refused, check the details before the type. The refused list names the lookalikes: a preliminary statement, a marketing letter or a fee statement instead of the account statement itself, and a card statement from a retail store. If it is a real account statement, go through the five things every proof of address must show: name, address, issue date, issuing authority and its reference.

How recent a proof of address has to be, by country

Validity runs from the date of issue, and the page sets it by country. Find yours in the page’s own table; the groups are:

ValidityApplies to
6 monthsAll countries not on the page’s shorter lists, unless the document states otherwise, up to 1 year
3 monthsA listed group of countries and regional Binance entities, named on the page
2 monthsOne listed country

A document issued a day outside the window is refused. If a bill arrives monthly, use the latest one; if a bank statement is quarterly, download a fresh one from the bank’s site rather than scanning the last paper copy.

How to scan or photograph a proof of address

The page’s upload rules, which are what an “unreadable” refusal points to:

  • PDF is recommended; colour screenshots and colour scans are accepted; photocopies are not.
  • The first page must be visible and all the data readable.
  • Capture in portrait, with all four corners in the frame, no cuts.
  • No blur, no reflections, not black and white.
  • Original, unedited documents only.
  • Accepted formats: PDF, JPG, JPEG, PNG.

A paperless bill downloaded as a PDF from the provider’s site satisfies all of these at once and is the easiest route. A phone photo of a paper bill works if it is taken flat, in daylight, with the whole page in the frame.

How long the proof of address review takes

The page gives the review time as “up to 1-2 working days” and says you will be notified of the outcome, with “no need to contact the Support Center” in the meantime. A refusal comes with a reason; change the one thing it names, and resubmit.

If the refusal is about the address not matching, check what you typed before blaming the document. The address entered during verification and the address on the document must agree line by line, including the unit number and the postcode. If you have genuinely moved, update the residence first through the residential address process, which takes the proof of address as one of its own steps.

When the proof of address is really an identity problem

Two refusals are not about the address at all. If the name on the document differs from the verified name, the fix is a document in the verified name, or, if the name has legally changed, an identity update with the new ID first; see updating verified identity details. If the request for proof of address arrived as part of a wider review with questions about ties to a country, the address document is one piece of a compliance check; the rest of that process is covered in how long verification takes.
